At the Grand Prix of Portugal, that’s been run last weekend in the little town Santiago Do Cacem, in the region of Algarve, 120 km south from Lisbon, in the weekend from 8th to 10th October, AIROH riders hit a resounding double podium of EnduroGP overall parade with two first positions taken by the Spanish Josep Garcia, who preceded the English Brad Freeman.
On Saturday, on Day 1, Andrea Verona gets on the third step of the podium, as on Sunday on Day 2, the English Nathan Watson is back to EnduroGP after three years absence, first for his commitment with Extreme Enduro, then with Beach Race competitions, where he won Enduro of Touquet in 2019. In short, a World FIM Enduro Championship 2021 more and more in name of AIROH.
After two EnduroGP podiums all for AIROH with Garcia, Freeman, Verona and Watson, E1 class was ruled by Verona, who got two splendid wins, strengthened his leadership in World Championship parade, even though there’s another Grand Prix to run next weekend in France in Langeac.
In E2 class, Garcia’s double victory makes him increase his leadership by 22 points, in a national parade where Steve Holcombe moved to third position before the New Zealander Hamish Macdonald.
In E3 class, two wins and overall supremacy of Brad Freeman, who is virtually the world champion thanks to 32 points advantage over the Spanish, AIROH rider too, Jaume Betriu, as the English Daniel Mccanney on third position completes a podium entirely for AIROH in this class.
Skimming the report of AIROH results in this second Grand Prix, run in 2021 in Portugal, that replaced the one in Germany planned in Zschopau on the same date and cancelled because of Covid-19, we find, in EnduroGP parade on Saturday, Holcombe on fifth position, behind Garcia, Freeman, Verona and Watson, Betriu on seventh, MacCanney on ninth and Thomas Oldrati completing the top ten.
On Sunday on Day 2, Holcombe ended sixth, Betriu seventh, Oldrati eighth, McCanney tenth. In the single classes, in E1 double victory for Verona and Samuele Bernardini twice fifth, Antoine Magain seventh and sixth, Bruno Crivillin, ninth and seventh, Wade Tinkler, who pulled back because of a fall and eighth. In E2 class, dominated by Garcia, Watson ended twice on second position, Holcombe twice on third position, Oldrati fifth and fourth, Macdonald sixth and fifth, Jack Edmondson ninth and seventh, Alex Snow twice on top ten. In E3, behind Freeman, Betriu, hit two second places, Daniel McCanney one third and fourth, Rudy Moroni two eight places.
In Junior class, Roni Kytonen is back to races after the injury of the right foot in Estonia GP, and now is first in overall parade on Saturday and third on Sunday with one win and one second class position in EJ1.
Race with ups and downs for Manolo Morettini in Junior EJ1, ended on seventh and eighth position.
Next meeting of AIROH riders with World FIM EnduroGP Championship, Grand Prix of France that will end the world season in Langeac next weekend 15-17 October.
